Pieces of Pizza

The aformentioned leftover pizza made up my lunch today.

On New Years day I was without a two for Tuesday companion. So I ordered two for myself. I believe that not to have the largest size possible when it’s BOGOF is wasted money, so I got two XXL. One, on a pan base, was the ‘special’ spinach and triple bacon. The other a half and half, featuring ‘Total Recall’ – another special, with chicken, more bacon, mixed peppers and other bits, and one half Papa John’s favourite, pepperoni & sausage with their six cheese blend.

Well the spinach and bacon triple was horrible. It was going for a pizza quiche vibe, with no tomato sauce, and just got it all sorts of wrong. I only ordered it through hungover intrigue as I was getting two massive pizzas. Slightly better cold but nothing special.

The total recall was a pleasure – interesting zingy flavours and though I don’t normally like chicken on a pizza it was fine here.

That was Thursday’s lunch.

Quiche Danger

Its back. The fabled lunch of Sheffield Waitrose era Lunch Club. A whole readymade quiche. This one was from the Co-op on Old Street and came into my path as leftover food from surplus at a Christmas party. It was still boxed so it was ‘that’ leftover but the best before date is tomorrow and there’s actually another one in the fridge so I thought I’d make a start.

Spinach and Feta. Not the most imaginative veggie combo but not too bad, the spinach was actually quite good. I heated it in the microwave as cold they really are a horror. I’d attempted to liven things up with a few shakes from a colleagues Extra Hot Tabasco sauce but the top was so congealed that prodding and poking with various ends of various utensils did nothing to yield the sauce.

Plain Quiche it was then. A quick glance at the nutrition info on the box showed a few reds and surely that was for half or quarter servings. I put that out of my mind as I planned on eating the whole thing and didn’t want to suffer any more with guilt. All done, and I am now a bit full. Not just of quiche but of regret and shame as well.

Merton College Lunch #1

File:Merton College front quad.jpg

Merton college. Spectacular. Delightful architecture, lush landscaped gardens.

Dodgy food.

Vegetable tart – quiche-esque, and quite good. Probably the only element of the meal I can say that of – well the roast veg with it was OK, but rounding the corner, my delight at seeing a cold foods buffet spread soon turned into bewilderment.

Cold meats of curious provenance. Chorizo-like, but cloying. Salads with queer dressing. Smoked salmon hinting at a farmed, unhappy existence. A cheese platter, so promising, yet so…. wide of the mark. A shame, but the only element of this marvellous place that isn’t holding my attention. Which is probably quite good, as these upcoming days and sleepless nights are certainly not about food.

Today for my lunch I had a Cornish Cruncher cheddar sandwich. This cheese is available from M&S and Dad is constantly bringing blocks home. The reason for this. it’s bleedin’ wonderful. little cruncher bits in a vibrant yet creamy monster of a cheddar. I highly recommend. Alongside it was some herb salad from a bag, wholegrain mustard (I’ve been loving the cheese and mustard combination of late – I think because pickle supplies are low) and mayonnaise. The bread was lightly toasted to release the full potential of the seeds nutty flavour. I also had a peppadew pepper stuffed with cream cheese which was launched straight from the jar to my mouth in a torrent of dripping oil and all before the fridge door had even finished it’s opening swing. Needless to say oil on the face and carpet. Gannetous. Some leftover Kettle cheese flavour things found their way to my mouth as well. Worth mentioning was that upon opening the fridge was the now infamous broccoli quiche from the supermarket (M&S this time; where else). I looked at it for about 4 seconds too long before reaching for the cruncher. If it’s still there tomorrow I might have to have it. Have you had my wonderful pasta purchase yet??
